Role-playing games rarely challenge the player’s physical coordination or reaction time, with the exception of action role-playing games.
Role-playing video games typically rely on a well-developed story and setting that is divided into a series of quests. Players control one or more characters by issuing commands that the character executes with efficiency determined by the character’s numerical attributes. Often these attributes increase each time the character gains a level, and the character’s level increases each time the player gains a certain amount of experience.
Role-playing video games also usually try to offer more complex and dynamic character interactions than what is found in other video game genres. This usually involves additional attention to artificial intelligence and scripted behavior of non-player characters controlled by the computer.
The premise of many role-playing games tasks the player with saving the world or some level of society that is under threat. ]]>In 1962, the space simulator Spacewar! was released. Its basic gameplay has two armed spaceships trying to shoot at each other while maneuvering in zero gravity between the stars. The ships were fired by missiles that moved under the influence of gravity. Each ship had a limited number of missiles and a limited supply of fuel. The hyperspace function could be used as a last resort to bypass enemy missiles, but the appearance of hyperspace occurred in a random place and there was a chance that the ship would explode when used.
In 1972, a video game for arcade slot machines, Pong, was released, developed by the Japanese company Taito Corporation and published by Atari. Pong quickly became popular, and it was the first commercially successful arcade slot machine, which stood at the origins of the gaming industry along with the first game console Magnavox Odyssey. Shortly after its release, several companies began producing games that copied Pong, but ended up producing new types of games.
In 1974, Atari released Gran Trak 10, the first car simulator. In 1981, President Elect, the first official political simulator, was released. Bullfrog Productions released the game Populous, which became one of the first successful god simulators. Wes Cherry created the game “Headscarf” – an implementation of the solitaire game “Headscarf”, and Robert Donner wrote Minesweeper, which shipped with every version of Microsoft Windows, starting with the third.
In 1994, The Need for Speed, a car racing simulator, was released. ]]>Adventure games are about unraveling stories, exploring worlds, and solving puzzles. Play as Ray McCoy as you complete missions to track down replicants in Razor’s Edge, embark on a four-year journey through the mystical Land of the Dead in Mexican folk art and film noir.Thunder of Fandango, or travel the globe confronting ancient conspiracies in Broken Sword. When you play an adventure game, you never know what you’re going to get. Fantasy, comedy, westerns, mysteries, horror or science fiction; there is an adventure game for everyone.
Adventure games focus on solving puzzles within a narrative, usually with little or no action. Other popular names for this genre are “graphic adventure” or “point-and-click adventure,” but they represent only a part of a much broader and more diverse range of games.
Adventure games are not based on what the dictionary defines as “adventure”. Some are, but many forgo the dangers and excitement for calmer, more thoughtful endeavors.
But labels can only take us so far. Many games push the boundaries of traditional genres in new and interesting ways while remaining at their core adventure games.Dreamfall, a sequel to the point-and-click classic.The Longest Journey, includes several hidden scenes and combat scenes.Heavy Rain is a new generation of interactive adventure movies with motion controls and fast-paced action. On the other end of the spectrum, titles like Mystery Case Files: Dire Grove mix a lot of “Where’s Waldo?” style scavenger hunts. Even Portal, which gives you a gun to solve physics-based puzzles instead of killing, qualifies as an adventure.
Of course, stories, puzzles, and exploration aren’t limited to adventures. More and more games outside of the genre are incorporating elements of an adventure game, such as Scribblenauts, Scythe, and Limbo. Given their common features, we will sometimes consider them as special “games of interest”, but always with the understanding that they fall outside our definition of an adventure game.

Players may also encounter tactical and exploration tasks, but these games sometimes require high reaction speed and good hand-eye coordination. In addition, the player is often under time pressure. In general, faster action games are more difficult.
When the video game industry started in the early 1970s after the success of Pong, most of the first arcade games were sports games that tried to imitate real sports, especially Pong clones and sometimes racing games. Although some action games began to gain popularity around the mid-1970s, with releases such as Gun Fight in 1975 and Sea Wolf in 1976, the industry was still largely dominated by sports games, although a flood of pong clones led to the video game crash in 1977.
